Types of Child Custody
When parents decide that they cannot continue to live together, the process of planning for their new lives apart involve a substantial number of considerations. Of all the issues that must be resolved, however, the determination of an arrangement for the custody of their child or children is typically the most important.
Child custody arrangements can have extremely important implications for both the lives of parents and children. They can play a large role in determining how the child will be raised, where they will live, and many other issues. Therefore, it is essential that the custody arrangement be made with the best interests of all parties in mind.
Different Forms of Custody
Child custody arrangements can occur in a number of different forms. The following is a brief explanation of the different types of custody arrangements that are typically pursued:
- Legal custody – legal custody gives a parent the right to make decisions about the child’s upbringing, involving such issues as religious upbringing, education, and healthcare decisions.
- Physical custody – physical custody gives a parent the right to have the child live with them.
These different types of child custody may be shared jointly between parents, or one parent may have sole physical and/or legal custody. Additionally, parents without physical custody rights may still be granted visitation rights.
